Once in a while a children’s picturebook comes along that is certain to become a keepsake, guaranteed to be read again and again. This story being one, the beautifully rendered illustrations are so full of narrative possibility, reminiscent of some of the great European master painters, they could be read entirely on their own.
In The Ordinary Life of Jacominus Gainsborough, twelve exquisitely illuminated spreads, epic in their composition, including ten portraits and numerous delightful cameo depictions, reveal the story of a humble, yet extraordinary rabbit named Jacominus, from his early years to the day ‘he fell asleep under the almond blossoms.’ We learn about an accident in infancy that left him with lifelong physical challenges, and later, of his gift for languages and desire for adventure and travel. And yet, despite all his eventful, far-flung experiences we discover that Jacominus has struggles too, burdened at times with episodes of doubt and sadness. In particular, the death of Grandma Beatrix, who had been an inspiration to him, gives him reason to pause and reflect. But ultimately Jacominus is receptive to the lessons that life teaches him, coming to realise that ‘people change, and time passes.’ Most importantly of all he finds love with his childhood sweetheart, Sweetie Vidocq and they raise a family together.
Beautifully produced and expertly designed, this hardback will certainly have universal appeal. However, with its small text font and themes of sadness and death this award-winning book is perhaps best enjoyed as a shared reading experience.
