Haughton’s first foray into non-fiction books tracks our species’ history through the lens of information accumulation. Sharing, storing and building up on information, Haughton posits, is what made possible the extraordinary achievements of humanity in a relatively short amount of time. This compelling argument is made clearly through chapters that are both chronological and thematic, starting with the origins of language all the way to AI.
Clever use of colour schemes, layout and arborescence ensures smooth visual communication. Photos of historical artefacts are fully integrated into Haughton’s trademark style of vibrant colours and mark- making, while the protagonists of this epic story are rendered in stylised, blocky black- and-white illustrations (always in profile), effectively marking them as belonging to one, human race.
The book’s focus gradually settles on the West, but real effort is made to offer a global perspective. Unusually for children’s non- fiction, this is a rather personal and political book in its commentary on capitalism, sexism, racism, colonialism and the climate crisis. For each new technology, Haughton balances the idea of progress with the excesses and abuses it can lead to, making this a both fascinating and sobering read. The final step, from the history, mechanics and politics of STEM into philosophical territory, would perhaps have benefited from more space and clarity.
Overall, this ambitious book is as dense and complex as it is captivating and accessible.
