One Sweet Song

A book that celebrates music, creativity and community; One Sweet Song was inspired by the impromptu balcony musical performances during the Covid 19 pandemic. The story begins with a little girl hearing one musical note ringing out as she looks out her window, she joins in by playing a note on her triangle and soon many of her neighbours have also joined in to create a song together.

This lyrical story integrates lots of elements which young readers and those reading with them will enjoy. Numbers from one to ten are woven into the story so children will have the chance to practice counting. Musical instruments from around the world are played alongside homemade instruments like pots and pans, which may inspire children to make music with whatever they have at home. The story integrates many different and diverse characters and homes, with the sense of community created by the music being a strong theme in the book. The illustrations are colourful and full of life and movement, reflecting the sense of the music swirling and sounding through the neighbourhood. Richly textured drawings with a handdrawn style show scenes of people creating music full of details for readers to notice.

This book is a poetic and expressive exploration of how music connects and unites communities and has a read aloud and rhythmic quality. A lovely addition to any book collection.
