Peggy Goes Gardening
This is a light-hearted story about a little girl called Peggy who loves gardening with her mum. Peggy likes to help out with planting beans, pulling weeds and picking fruit, but things don’t always go according to plan! Before long, Peggy ends up taking a break from gardening to lie on the grass and relax after all her hard work.
There is a lot to like in this picturebook for a younger child. Peggy is an adventurous and confident character who likes to follow her instincts and get hands on with nature, with her catchphrase being ‘I can do it!.’ Peggy’s mother encourages her and spending time together having fun is a key theme along with connecting to nature, which is central to the story and embraced by Peggy and her mum alike.
The illustrations are bright and engaging with enough detail to make them fun to look at again and again. Peggy looks like a real-life girl you might know and children will relate to her efforts to do things right, but sometimes getting them wrong. Peggy’s energy and optimism shine through and help give the message that it’s okay to make mistakes.
