Children of Blood and Bone is an exciting fantasy adventure told from the perspective of its three main characters, Zélie, Amari and the King’s son, Inan, who has been tasked with hunting Zélie and Amari down. Structuring the novel in this way, author Tomi Adeyemi allows us to see each character not just through their own eyes, but also through the eyes of the other central protagonists, ensuring that they always feel complex, engaging and compelling. This level of detail also extends to the universe and mythology Adeyemi forms around these characters, and readers will love getting lost in the pages of this world. At almost 600 pages, this is a long book; however, the storyline moves at such a fantastic pace that you rarely feel the time go by as you read. With some moments of violence and some disturbing scenes, this is a book best suited to the older end of the Young Adult market. A very ambitious novel which should appeal to all fans of the fantasy genre.
