Says Who?
Beginning with the voice of a dour sausage dog, the scene is set for a varied cast of animals, food and assorted objects who remind the reader what they can and more importantly CAN’T do. Our grumpy sausage dog tells a pond full of fish they can’t climb trees and reminds cats that they can’t do science, and the narrative delightfully continues in this vein, getting wackier and funnier, with foods like soup, cheese and cabbages all added to the mix, followed by a spanner and some teacups!
As the oblivious dog moves on, the characters set out to prove him wrong and show us exactly what they are capable of, with some hilarious consequences, such as fish climbing trees, cats launching rockets and slugs morphing into magicians.
With the title of the book used as a memorable refrain on every page, the
text is a beautiful mix of alliteration and rhyme with a few clever puns appealing to younger readers and their adults, who are sure to be asked to read this book aloud again and again. The bright illustrations and sense of adventure are a delight on each page, with the characters depicted in vivid colours against quirky backdrops and block backgrounds. The animated style of illustration expertly shows expressive movement and humour, with lots of extra details for readers to spot. In particular, on the striking final double page readers are inspired to dare to be different themselves.
