A Flash of Neon
In a small town in Scotland, 14-year-old Laurie is supposed to be having a normal day working at her mum’s bookshop; but this is the big day! Her friend, Neon from New York, has travelled all the way to Scotland to meet her. The issue is, all of her friends don’t actually believe he’s real – they think Laurie has made him up and insist on joining Laurie to meet the dreamy Neon, but when he steps off the train, they are all in for a surprise …
Together, Laurie and Neon have an unbelievable secret, and Laurie struggles to navigate how to introduce her new friend to everyone without being suspicious. Sometimes the perfect friend comes along when you most need it; with Neon around, Laurie grows in her confidence, learns what real friendship is and embraces the power of imagination. But Neon is running out of time and along with navigating the awkwardness of teenage friendships and self-discovery, Laurie realises that everything can change suddenly.
With a magical plot twist right at the beginning, this book bridges the gap between reality and imagination. This is a story about the importance of family, the strength of friendship, overcoming the fear of failing and that if you truly believe in something it can become real.
