Something's About to Blow Up

After six girls in Raven’s Hill School are injured in a chemistry lab explosion, secrets begin to unravel, and mystery develops as we learn that the cause of this explosion may not be as straightforward as it first seemed. As the girls begin to learn the truth of what led them to their hospital beds and who has really been lurking at their school, more trouble is brewing, and a 24-hour countdown begins.

This book is a well-paced and intriguing mystery from start to finish. Blake has created a story which provides the reader with small snippets of information sprinkled throughout so that the mystery is slowly revealed as you read rather than being completely solved right at the end, something which is common in the genre.

Each chapter switches to a point of view of another of the girls with journal entries from the explosion’s culprit and social media post entries dotted throughout, something that kept the book very engaging to read. At certain points readers may find the number of characters and switching points of view confusing, however as the book progresses readers begin to understand the characters a lot better, and soon it all starts to click into place.

The ending of the book leaves the reader satisfied and simultaneously hungry for more mysteries. A great introduction to the mystery and thriller genre for a young reader.
