Ben and Finn have lived in North Dublin all their lives, gone to the same schools,
had the same friends and shared the same expectations. But the modern world being as unstable as it is, those lives are suddenly turned upside down when their parents lose their jobs, and the family has to up sticks and move.
Luckily for them, their aunt lives in a rambling house in County Clare, right on the edge of the Burren. It would be challenging enough for two city lads to have to adapt to the country, living with their aunt, her wife and a Korean American cousin, but unbeknownst to them, their arrival has been much anticipated by watchers from the Old World, makers of mischief and magic from the days of Irish legend ...
Sinéad O’Hart mixes the everyday stresses of family life with tales of the Morrigan and the Cailleach, ancient foes who shape the land itself and have done fierce battle since the days of the Tuatha De Danann. For teens used to online gaming in fantasy worlds, heavy metal music and enhanced reality, none of this is as unnerving as you might expect. Ben and Finn find strength in each other’s differences and new-found friendships. There is tension, drama and plenty of action but also moments of humour, self-doubt and teenage angst. The parents are only partly aware of what is going on, but the ending is left open enough to suggest that there will surely be many more battles to come.
