Tiger, It's Snowing!

Beautiful textured illustrations rendered in oil pastel adorn the pages. Some might argue that the tactility of this medium could have been exaggerated further in certain cases – perhaps by using an impasto technique on the snow. Hues of blue and grey form the backdrop to the narrative making a vibrant orange tiger and red-coated Mei pop out from the page and truly take centre stage. Toward the close of the book, snow-swept landscapes are swapped for cosier scenes depicting warmer tones. Daishu Ma herself has suggested that teachers could use this book to create a new sensory experience in the classroom. Children could recreate their own version of Tiger and Mei’s snowball fight by crumpling up pieces of paper, listening to their sound and feeling their weight and texture.

When Mei gets chilly and starts to sneeze, Tiger wraps her up in his warm paws and they head home to a steaming hot bowl of soup and plan to build a snowman the next day.
