What We Wear When We Take Care

To create an engaging and fun children’s book about safety equipment is an impressive feat.
Not only is it an introduction to how equipment can protect us, but it also shows the range of jobs and everyday activities in which it is necessary, cleverly alternating between scenes of work and scenes of children at play.

This is a book that is meant to be read aloud, and properly read aloud, with clatters, clonks, booms and rumbles. Children will delight in the fun noises that are encouraged, resulting in a book that is sure to be asked for again and again. The artwork pairs wonderfully with the text, and the different sounds are enlarged and playfully placed upon the page, which will encourage young readers to read aloud too. The use of a very limited palette of blues, browns and blacks results in the bright yellows and whites popping off the page, which highlight the many different types of safety equipment. Although the illustrations may appear simple, there is lots to discover on each page and it is very thoughtfully done, with younger readers especially in mind.

There is a lot to be said for a simple idea creatively executed and this book achieves that in several different ways.
