A Year in Our Garden

This beautiful book is a journal of endeavours taken on by the Cranmore Community Co-operative. Chronicling a year in the community garden, beautiful illustrations and scientific discoveries allow the reader to delve in and out of the changing seasons of the garden.

Each season provides its own unique way in which the reader can be engaged by and at one with nature. The artists who contributed to this book and the community garden, creatively turn natural resources into works of art, guiding the reader as to how to use the natural elements in their own gardens to create art; marbling, paper making, seed bombs and cooking are a few of the skills that this book teaches. Ruth Le Gear, Sarah Ellen Lundy, Brenda Kearney, Naomi Draper and Karen Webster all added beautiful elements of their own specialisms to the community garden. Likewise, the scientists Dr Ruth Quinn, Dr Agnieszka Piwowarcyk, Róisín NigFhloinn and Martina Killan engage the reader with the scientific aspects of the garden through the observations of the wildlife and ecosystems that the community group carried out. For young readers there is guidance on how to observe, record and evaluate species and wildlife in a simple and effective way.

Overall, this book is a beautiful snapshot of a moment in time at Cranmore. Not only will it be a memory of a year in this urban space for those who were involved, but anyone who has the pleasure of reading and owning this book can now emulate the wonderful findings and activities in their own green spaces.
