The First Cat in Space and the Baby Pirate's Revenge
The fourth book in the series First Cat, our heroes, First Cat, LOZ 4000, and Moon Queen return for a sailing to adventure across the seas and skies of the Moon. In this newest instalment we follow the plight of Captain Babybeard (a baby pirate with a beard) when his first mate, the Martian pirate James Plantain (a literal banana pirate) in an act of betrayal, leaves Captain Babybeard alone on a desert Island.
This graphic novel mixes a classic serving of adventure stories with a dash of science fiction, a sprinkling of fantasy and a healthy dose of screwball comedy. Adding depth to the lore of the tale, BabyBeard himself talks so fluently in pirate, this reviewer was led on my own quest to find a dictionary! The illustration is wonderfully tactile in a hand drawn, pencil crayon style, with rich colouring, incredibly inventive environments and dynamically drawn characters.
This is one of the most beautiful books of its genre. The story is so densely packed with pirate tropes and conventions you can barely see the bottom: Buried treasure? Of course! Sea shanties? Only the best ones! Sword fights? Like you wouldn’t believe. Ghosts? Got them. Betrayal? Yup. Sea Dogs? Yes, and real ones too! A talking poet worm? – perhaps … you’ll have to read it and find out!
