The concept of reading one characters version of the story, and then being able to flip the book around and read the point of view of the other character, was immensely fun and exciting. Experiencing the same moments through different eyes was thrilling and something this reviewer never personally experienced before. It certainly added so many layers to the characters and truly deepened their relationship on the page. The stakes are high for both Hannah and Toby and it was thrilling to read as they attempted to navigate their circumstances together in this beautifully written and dramatic story.
While this reviewer must confess to not having read any other books from Barnes yet, this story is a prequel to The Inheritance Games series and reads perfectly fine as a stand-alone book – although, it’s undoubtably full of Easter eggs for those who are already fans! This book is definitely aimed at a young adult audience with a lot of swearing and mature themes. Overall, it’s perfect read for fans of drama and the enemies-to-lovers trope.
