The Unfamous Diaries of Daisy Brewster: The Frenemies
Eleven-year-old Daisy dreams of becoming a famous actor, but her ordinary life is in sharp contrast to her cousin’s – the very famous Maxxy Bloom. Daisy and Maxxy were once close, before Maxxy made the move to LA, and became an actual TV star. Now Daisy feels that she is very different to her cousin, and that Maxxy’s success only serves to highlight Daisy’s shortcomings.
Told in a diary format from Daisy’s perspective, this is perfect read for fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dork Diaries and the Milly McCarthy series. The pages are lined in notebook style, and the illustrations serve to highlight Daisy’s biggest predicaments, for example, the impending Maxxy apocalypse! There are plenty of humorous moments as Daisy navigates her way through her life, along with glimpses of her family dynamics, which will hopefully feature more prominently in future books.
There is plenty to like here, not least the playful illustrations, but also Daisy’s thoughts, fears, concerns, and relief as she shares her innermost feelings. These feelings are sure to resonate with the reader, as lessons are learned and reminders that all is not always as it seems. The first in the series from Jenny Valentine, much groundwork is laid that will continue in the next instalment as readers are left on an abrupt cliffhanger ending, that may leave some readers wanting more.
