Lizzy has dreams of being a famous inventor, but her pet hamster has escaped, and she has to invent something to find him. With help from her babysitter and fellow inventor Ruby, Lizzy learns all about the skills required to become an inventor, how to follow a checklist, and how to consider the audience, safety, and sustainability of anything you might invent.
As the book shows Lizzy learning about the history of some inventions, mostly by women and even by some young girls just like her, it cleverly puts across the message that it is important not to get disheartened if something doesn’t work first time, but to keep trying and never give up. With important representations of disability, Lizzy herself has cochlear implants and uses sign language, while her mentor Ruby has prosthetic hands, it is wonderful to see main characters whose disabilities do not hold them back. Ruby is based on a real-life inspirational girl called Tilley Lockey, who helped to design bionic arms for young people, further celebrating technological innovations that can help people with disabilities.
Young readers will love this delightful book about curiosity, thinking outside the box, and the importance of being methodical.
