Champions of the Galaxy
When planet Earth faces an attack from an alien galaxy, a species called the Onni seeks help from the Global Council of Earth. To fight this common enemy, children are recruited to become space champions by completing trials. Kola is keen to take part as he has always been interested in space and believes this will help progress treatment for his sister who has Sickle Cell Disease.
This story underlines the importance of accepting people from different cultures and backgrounds and shows how this is an enriching experience. Kola must find courage and leadership qualities as he faces the Terra Trials with his team. The children have to learn to acknowledge their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as accept their team members for who they are. Through the trials the children also learn about each other’s cultures.
By weaving together themes of courage and friendship with fascinating facts on astronomy and space, the story becomes an exciting space-themed adventure. The importance of teamwork and trust is emphasised as the children try to successfully complete their appointed trials. There is a lovely balance between learning about space related topics as well as following the children’s thrilling journey, seeing how they face danger and change their attitudes.
This book would be a great addition to the bookshelves of children looking at space or to accompany reading during Space Week. Its themes of diversity and inclusion are equally important.
