Edwards uses an interesting language style which highlights the differences between ‘the river folk’ and ‘the dry folk,’ helping to create a distinctive voice for Tess which is influenced by the author’s creative world-building. This is a fast-paced story which is sure to retain the interest of middle-grade readers. With action-packed scenes along the way, the mystery of Tess’s past will keep readers turning pages and its revelation makes for some exciting payoffs. The themes of friendship and acceptance are prominent throughout the story, with the relationship between Tess and Chris – a child who is one of the ‘dry folk’ – highlighting that despite their differences, friendships can occur in the most unlikely places.
