Eurek-HER! Stories of Inspirational Women in STEM
Eurek-HER! tells the stories of 20 female pioneers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and is a must-read for budding young scientists, particularly for girls, who do not often see themselves in the history of the field.
Frances Durkin chronologically lays out the biographies of significant female figures in STEM in clear, simple language. We start with Tapputi Belatekallim of ancient Mesopotamia, the earliest perfume maker named in history, and end with Kenya’s Nzambi Matee, who was named a Young Champion of the Earth in 2020 by the United Nations Environment Programme. The book shows the diversity in the field, as the women come from all over the world, from every kind of socioeconomic background and with various barriers to their education.
Beautifully illustrated by Nur Ventura, each page features a full-colour image of the scientist at work alongside simple diagrams and details of their innovations. The pages are laid out in an engaging, attractive way, with plenty of infographics that inform the reader without being overwhelming.
As well as the stories of inspirational women, the book includes 12 simple experiments that can be tried at home, such as designing a bridge and making a lava lamp. The back of the book features a glossary of useful scientific terms and a table of elements. Eurek-HER! is ideal for children with an interest in STEM or in history, but the bite-sized information and colourful aesthetic means that it would fascinate any reader.
