Milly finds lots to love in Kerry. For starters, it is really cool because all the road signs and shop names are in Irish, so it is exactly like being in a completely different world, like PORTUGAL or MARS! With a hike, treasure hunt, a céilí, rogue wasp, a large cowpat and a late-night game of truth or dare in the mix – what could go wrong in Coláiste Cormac?
Told from Milly’s perspective, the book is written in diary style with clever use of type-face, capitals and layout offering lots to engage and entertain readers. Milly is joined on her adventure by a host of relatable characters; Mr Manley the principal, kind Múinteoir Emer, farming twins, Finn and Fionn, Big Bow Rebecca and her BFF Laura.
It is refreshing to see a book in an Irish setting complete with cúpla focal and charming doodle style line drawings and checklists by illustrator Karen Harris which complement the story and plot. The Treasure hunt activity is a nice bonus also! This is the fifth book in the popular series and like the others, it is feel-good, funny and well-paced story for young readers.
